The Standard Chair by Jean Prouvé has become one of the most famous classics of the French “constructor.” The seat and back of this discreet and iconic chair are offered in various types of wood, and the metal frame is available in different colors. During World War II, Jean Prouvé responded to the scarce metal supply with a version made entirely of solid wood and plywood.

Chairs bear more stress on the rear legs since they are the ones that absorb the weight of the upper body. The engineer and designer Jean Prouvé applied this simple idea to the unmistakable design of the Standard chair: the front legs, which support a relatively small weight, are made of tubular steel, while the rear legs are large-volume hollow elements that transmit the tension to the floor.
