The sculptural expressiveness of Noguchi’s work is evident in the Freeform Sofa, a design completely unlike any other of its time. Combined with the Ottoman, it makes up a sculptural ensemble reminiscent of large boulders. Its organic streamlined forms are graceful and flowing. Noguchi enhances the lightness of the elements with fine and comfortable padding for which he chooses fabrics in natural colors. The Freeform Sofa and Ottoman were made around 1950 in a limited series. Today’s few original pieces that remain from that series fetch sky-high prices at auction. In 2002, the Vitra Design Museum began manufacturing the set as an authentic reissue. The Freeform Sofa is not only suitable for living rooms but also for lobbies, hotels, and shops.
