The iconic Butterfly Stool by Japanese designer Sori Yanagi is a classic piece that masterfully combines oriental shapes with the plywood shaping technique developed by Charles and Ray Eames. The gently arched silhouette of the two parts of the seat recalls a butterfly’s wings at the – perpetual – moment of beginning to fly. The stool is made of maple or rosewood.

BUTTERFLY
Sori Yanagi was born in 1915 in Tokyo. He studied at the local art school and worked between 1940 and 1942 in the office of designer Charlotte Perriand.
In 1952, he founded the Yanagi Industrial Design Institute, which over time, would extraordinarily design numerous pieces of furniture and everyday objects. Sori Yanagi’s organically shaped designs meld Western industrial design with Japan’s craft tradition. Thus, Sori Yanagi became one of the most significant post-war Japanese designers. In addition to furniture, he designs lamps, glass objects, cutlery, children’s toys, metro stations, cars, and motorcycles.
